DuraCoat Firearms Finishes Quick Guide

Some general comments

  • Duracoat should only be applied indoors in a garage or similiar building with good ventilation or outdoors and never in the home. Masks, N-95 paper filter type are always recommended as minimum protection with good ventilation.

  • The process of applying DuraCoat is not much more difficult than painting a lawn chair with spray paint. The biggest difference is that DuraCoat is a resin and you must mix it with the supplied hardener before spraying it on your weapon.
DuraCoat will react with any Silicon near your project.
Even Silicon in a sealed tube across the room can cause a reaction.

  • DuraCoat -
    • Cures by chemical process after mixing the DuraCoat and hardener.
    • Drys overnight so the weapon can be reassembled the next day, and then be used.
    • Available in a large variety of colors
  • DuraBake -
    • Is cured by baking the weapon in an oven for a period of time and uses heat to cure. (See the DuraBake page)
    • Availabe in a limited number of colors.
    • Availabe in Aerosol cans, does not require an airbrush and a compressor or propellant.
  • Weapon preparation -
    • Is very important prior to applying DuraCoat.
      • Degrease the weapon.
      • Surface preparation (Table follows on this page).

First you need to make some choices

  • Pick the Pattern or Solid Color of your choice (Rifle & Pistol).
  • Decide if you have a way of applying the DuraCoat it must be sprayed onto the weapon.
    • If you do not have a airbrush and then we have low cost airbrushes, and the new Preval Disposable Sprayer.
      • Our airbrushes come with standard fitting to connect to your compressor.
      • Usually you will set the output pressure on your compressor from 10 to 12 pounds.
        • If you do not have an compressor you will need to also purchase some cans of propellant.
        • Typically one can of propellant will do one or two rifles.
      • Preval Disposable Sprayers are designed to be filled, and then used with upto 4 oz. of DuraCoat.
  • We recommend TruStrip™ to cut all gunk and grease fast. It dries extremely fast without leaving residue. This product is ideal for use as a cleaner prior to refinishing with DuraCoat® products.
  • We recommend you purchase some Reducer to clean your airbrush and tools.
    • DuraCoat is a resin not paint, paint thinner will not clean your airbrush and tools.
  • You might consider DuraCoat®clear to even out the slight sheen differences when using multiple colors, such as camouflage patterns. Its not necessary, but recommended highly for a top notch finish.
    • DuraCoat®clear can also be applied over any color to add a more matte, gloss, or satin finish.
